Where Allen wears a frilly cravat. <3 And bluffs and uses underhanded methods to win court battles.
Kanda is a little like Simon Blackquill with all the sword metaphors.
Link is Allen’s companion in investigations, and Allen always insists that “it’s just a ladder”, while Link comments that Allen needs to appreciate a little more specificity, or else he won’t get anywhere in life, while Kanda really couldn’t care less.
Allen’s first case is the murder (???) of his mentor, Cross Marian. He has to defend Neah Walker, while the real murderer is Apocryphos—except right before the Earl delivers the “NOT GUILTY” verdict, Cross slams the doors open with his foot, and yells: "Who told you bastards you could write me off for dead? *evil glint*"
Kanda is later accused for the murder of Alma Karma. Allen offers to defend him, after much, much arguing and stubbornness. Even then, Kanda realizes that he might have done it after all, and pleads “guilty”. Still, Allen believes in him, even if Kanda doesn’t believe in himself. Turns out Alma’s death was not because of Kanda strangling him (since Alma—y’know, killing spree), but because of an artificial hallucinogen/poison injected into to him by Lvellie, who stole it from the Science Department. (Motive being that Alma knew something that could destroy the 2nd Prosecutors’ project.)
Kanda leaves a suicide note: “Prosecutor Kanda Yuu chooses death”, and Allen is fucking devastated and the anger torments him for half a year, before Kanda returns just when Allen’s in a pinch. He says to Allen, that his purpose as a prosecutor will no longer be out of revenge, but the find the truth, and become, like Allen—a destroyer who saves. Allen… Is really moved. But still really angry at him for disappearing on him. This time, the accused is the Earl (yes, the Judge), who is accused of killing Mana Walker, but no prosecutor is willing to file charges, because of the Earl’s connections and manipulation in the background. No one, but Kanda. Until the Earl kidnaps Lenalee, and forces Allen to be his defense attorney. Well, much stalling later, Link and the police department, and Komui with a giant robot (with feelings), crash into the court house wall, with the Earl captured, and Lenalee in safe hands.
The anger dissipates eventually, and they pitter patter around each other awkwardly in stupid love. Everyone gets fed up with their courtroom UST. Zhu, the new judge, despite his usually calm manner, once slammed the gavel so hard, it flew and got stuck on the ceiling, and he shouted: "The defense and prosecution will CEASE their thinly-veiled courtroom eye-sex, and save their homoerotica for AFTER the trial! God! Kids these days."
It takes a promotion (for Kanda) for the idiots to finally admit they’re mad for each other. Right before the plane leaves for Japan, Allen tackles him out of the line. They bicker and bicker (“You fucking idiot! Now I have to line up all over again!” “As if! You’re not going anywhere, I need you!” “??!” “U-Uh… Yeah, got a problem with what I said? *bluuuush*” “Will you two lovebirds get a room?!”), and Kanda… He goes to Japan anyway. He tells Allen to wait for him.
Allen sends him nasty (mirthless and childish, really) snail mail written by a 3-foot feather ink pen (the writing is illegible) for the next few months (even though there’s email, and they do video calls twice a week) until Kanda comes back screaming at him to stop (“Why the fuck are you still writing?! I told you yesterday I was coming back! And who the fuck is Kato?!”).
And then they spend the rest of their life having high-tension court battles together, on the constant quest for the truth. :q

Though Maya drops by at the agency sometimes, Phoenix doesn’t get to see her very often, as she has to see over Kurain village and all. And yet, Phoenix finds that mountain too high to scale and visit her himself.
…and yet he flies all the way from Calipan/Japanifornia to Germany “to study the various law systems there”—oh, come on, we all know he was also there to visit Edgeworth. Probably asked his help with the Jurist system, too. But I wonder if he brought Trucy. If he did, that must have been a lot of trouble. More than scaling a mountain, anyway.
(I wonder if Phoenix can speak any German? Oho. I’d love to see him speaking German with Edgeworth, for those moments when they don’t want to be overheard, or want to talk in private. Too bad it’s not a very sexy in-bed language. lmao)
I wonder if Maya ever tried to convince him to return to lawyering. In the end, the one who convinced him and got his badge back was Edgeworth.
Edgeworth and Phoenix are lawyers, through-and-through. The court is their life, and they’re partners in court. Basically, I see them as life partners.
Edgeworth:Wright, take a look at this paper on Dr. Cykes and Ms. Blackquill's research.
Phoenix:(Ponco and Clonco. They're the "robots with hearts" that Dr. Cykes created.)
Phoenix:A heartbeat detection system lets them determine when a human is present. In addition, they can recognize people by their ID tag or facial features and infer peoples' emotions by analyzing their tone of voice. That's amazing.
Phoenix:Hey, I don't know, Edgeworth. They might even be more human than you.
Someone else before that had called me a practiced cleaner, but I only started learning how to clean not very long ago. I kinda winged it. (Though, okay, I’ve been using Photoshop since I was a small kid.)
It took me many hours, and I’m very slow. I’m also probably doing things the long way around, since I don’t know any other way to do it.
Edited out spots of dust, and cloned out the fold. Actually, I don’t think they even bothered dust-cleaning the previous few volume covers? Anyway, these are the individual selections and layers for selective recolouring:
The black text was desaturated. Many of the black thumbnails there actually represent really small selections, such as the green strands in the hair. Certain parts of the image needed to be saturated a lot, some only a little. Using selective colour probably would have been quicker, but less accurate. I actually brightened the bg grey more than the brightness in the original, since I thought the luminosity was too similar with the rest of the image. There are brightness, saturation, and levelling layers.
I selected the colours by various means. But I usually select > colour range’d, cleaned up the selection via polygon select, then quick mask. Went alt-mode on mask and painted out the rest of the specks, and then used “refine selection“‘s smoothing.
Let’s take a look at the tone on the right. People would level the entire image, but often people don’t care about the really like textures that get faded out. Groups often do that with screen tones, and as a result many pictures lose a lot of tonal range, I find. (The light check layer is done by lowering brightness to minimum, just in case anyone didn’t know already)
3 layers used to clean the right textures. I kinda did it improperly, since I color range-selected out dust.
